A naked bike ride event staged worldwide had a tragic accident mar the event when the owner of a new black BMW plowed into a crowd of the cyclists at the corner of 22nd and Hawthorne a little after 10pm last night, causing a chain reaction crash and a number of both minor and serious injuries to the riders. Strangely, a Portland police officer sitting in a car in dry cleaning parking lot failed to respond or to phone in the incident for nearly 20 minutes. Finally, a fire department emergency paramedic crew responded after a number of riders were unable to get up of the street, likely due to broken bones or head trauma.
The bicycle route wasn't marked with either flares or a barricade. Strangely, the event was supposed to make the public aware of the vulnerability of bicyclists on the road with cars, yet little was done by the event organizers to set safe parade routes.

No, Maurice. I was an eyewitness to the accident as it happened. It was right near my home on 22nd. And the response was very slow when some cyclists weren't able to get up. The policeman parked at the dry cleaning shop didn't leave his car, and appeared very slow to call 911. My eyewitness view was that a serious accident wasn't handled very well.
Also there weren't any flares, barricades or markers at the corner of 22nd and Hawthorne, which only allowed the motorist to foolishly turn right into the crowd of cyclists.
I was shocked by this accident and the slow response.

Hmm. Only one or two helmets on; I wonder about head injuries. Did you see any Paul?

I don't know about you guys, but neither my road bike, nor my mountain bike has saddles comfortable enough to ride in regular (non-padding cycling) shorts, let alone naked. Seriously, that has to HURT!

"yet little was done by the event organizers to set safe parade routes."
This isn't true at all. The entire ride had police escorts blocking traffic at most intersections. Unfortunately there weren't enough officers to block all the intersections at all times, but with 13 thousand riders that is to be expected.

Hello Doc Epador. Actually for legal reasons I had to use this approved photo courtesy of this event held in Brussels where few helmets were worn. And posting nudity is a tricky issue on the web. There are complex record keeping rules required by the federal government to be sure that no one under legal age is depicted. So seeking consent documents from each individual and checking their age would be required. For this reason I didn't shoot any stills of my own to use of the event in Portland and just went with a previously approved photo to depict a pretty good representation of what the event looked like.
The Portland event was about 80% guys, and about 20% girls. Most riders only wore helmets. However, many of the girls were only topless. However, seeing less "beans and franks" this year compared to last year's mostly male event was interesting. Surprising to see so many nice looking girls do something wild like this. I didn't see where they brought clothes with them in packs, so many left their homes topless and sometimes bottomless. Wild. Not many people leave home naked in front of their neighbors. That's normally rare.
Strange seeing so many naked girls and not having to pay a cover charge. Maybe this event should take place every weekend.
