At an AMC club event, the Spot Cruise, this magnificent example of a custom 1968 AMC Rebel convertible showed up. Sporting an AMC Rebel Machine hood, and hopefully the custom dual four barrel crossfire intake manifold, this is one very nice convertible.
The AMC Rebel Machine had a very impressive 340hp. But why stop there, when custom intake manifolds and other parts could boost the power to absurdly brutal numbers.
AMC convertibles in general are a pretty rare breed. The company never built all that many. And this beautiful car represents one of the last of the line. In 1967, less than 1,700 were built by AMC. In 1968, even less were produced before AMC exited the convertible market until the last days in the mid80's when Renault owned a 49% share in the company and produced an Alliance convertible.
Long live the convertible!

I'm not very familiar with these AMC muscle cars at all, but I must say how strikingly they resemble the Dodge and Plymouth Hemi muscle from the same era.

Hello Michael. you're absolutely right about the resemblance. These later 70's AMC Rebels had a definite Mopar clone appearance. While the real Mopar cars had the superior horsepower, the AMC near-lookalikes still weren't too bad. You could still manage about 127mph from some of them.
Those AMC Rebels had a handsome look for a company once known their "bathtub" Ramblers.
The AMC convertible AMCs did tend to leak rain though. We only owned just one. But, they were nice affordable 1960's convertibles. Your Mopar models would cost much more as collectibles these days for sure.

Who copied who? Lets remember that AMC had this body design in 1967 and 68. If you know your Mopars you would know that their Copy of the AMC design did not appear till 1969!
Thanks
