The cages at the Bristol, Virginia animal shelter are filled with dogs for the most part. That is until about a week and a half ago when a dog and goat were picked up.
"I looked out my window and saw a goat and a dog walking down the street," said Loretta Smith, who found the pair. "They stayed right together."
When animal control officers arrived on the scene, they only planned on taking the dog with them, but the goat had a different idea.
"They were so inseparable," said Lisa Holly, the responding animal control officer. They were curled up together on Smith's porch when Holly arrived to pick up the Lab - or Louise, as she has been nicknamed.
As Holly led Louise away on a leash, Thelma (as she was nicknamed) leapt up and ran after them, rearing up, bleating and attempting to climb into Holly's truck, the officer said. Finally, with Holly's assistance, Thelma scrambled into the truck and fussed no further.
"They've probably been raised together at somebody's farm, and somehow got into the city," Holly said.
The pair is currently sharing a large pen at Jones Animal Hospital in Bristol.
"They're two girls on a great adventure," Holly said.
As of Wednesday, their owner had not come forward.
"It is the police department's hope the animals will be adopted together," the department deadpanned in a written statement. "It is apparent that separation of the two may be detrimental."

I've had a goat and four dogs on a few acres in the past. The poor goat couldn't understand why it wasn't allowed in the house with the dogs. [Well, except for the time the dogs let her in] It was as fierce a protector of the property as the dogs, and probably more brutal. Anyone not considered part of our "pack" was treated to aggressive bleating and a butt in the groin. Workmen would plead "you can leave the Rottie and the Shepherd loose, but tie up that darn goat!"
