I'm amazed to have seen that low budget slasher horror remake of FRIDAY THE 13th do so well on a romantic Valentine's Day weekend. I remember when Quentin Tarantino's excellent GRINDHOUSE got off to a poor start on Easter weekend a year ago. Also amazing to me is that PAUL BLART:MALL COP continues to do so well. It's much likely an overlong parody skit of a Bruce Willis DIE HARD film. It's also good to see some great films at least make a profit beyond their production costs. However as good as that BENJAMIN BUTTON is, it looks likely to need strong DVD sales to break even or to make a profit.

See Paul, that's where Hollywood goes wrong. People don't want "smart" movies that the "critics" usually love. The vast majority want a release. Something they can laugh at or relate to. Most of the movies that the critics think are going to do well agree with their political or ideological beliefs, but that's not what people look for in entertainment. The everyday people of this country want a bad remake of something they saw when they were younger. Why? Because it's not about politics, or trying to make a point about saving the planet.
