The creator of " Star Trek " and his wife will spend eternity together in space.
Celestis Inc., a company that specializes in "memorial spaceflights," said Monday that it will ship the remains of Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry into space next year.
The couple's cremated remains will be sealed into specially made capsules designed to withstand the rigors of space travel . A rocket-launched spacecraft will carry the capsules, along with digitized tributes from fans. The Roddenberrys' remains -- and the spacecraft -- will travel ever deeper into space and will not return to earth, company spokeswoman Susan Schonfeld said.
After Gene Roddenberry died in 1991, his wife commissioned Celestis to launch a part of his remains into space in 1997. She died Dec. 18, 2008.

May they live long and prosper throughout eternity. They will always be missed along with James Dooan and DeForrest Kelly. How so many people touch our lives in so many ways. I can only pray the world gets better and people are better to each other and all of those wonderful children around the world. They are what life is all about. If your well off, then give a bunch to those kids. Especially the ones in the hospitals. My wife and I do, and we're still struggling. Like they say, life is way too short for so many. God Bless, WolfRanger.

And it is the best way that I think they should go out. Space is the final frontier, and both will be blasting off into it. I Live on 1000 a month, no insurance. Hey, if they want to spend their money this way, have at it. If you take away people's money just because "other people need it" then it undermines the desire to work for it. Communism doesn't drive economies.
Besides, every time I hear the ships computer I hear Majel... she and Gene have provided us with more genuine thought provoking entertainment than 95% of Hollywood. They deserve to travel to the stars!

It is a nice idea to be together even in death, but considering the numerous things like poverty, diseases, education etc that need our collective effort to solve, I think using part of the fund needed for this project to help address some of these challenges would not have been a bad idea. But all the same, it is a wonderful way of staying together.

why are so many people complaining about the cost of this? Any funeral is outrageously expensive! You can easily spend $10,000 on a modest funeral, so is that a waste of money too? If it was your loved one would you deny them the funeral and donate that money to charity? I doubt it.
