Man admits sending 'monkey out of cage' message

vd.jpg

University of Florida officials said a man has confessed to sending a mysterious message through the school's emergency text message system. UF spokesman Steve Orlando told The Gainesville Sun that the man, a former employee of the university's text messaging service, told investigators the message was sent by accident.

Thousands of current and former faculty, staff and students received a text message reading "The monkey got out of the cage" Tuesday night.

Orlando said it does not appear that university data was compromised.

Authorities are investigating the incident. The university said officials are working to determine which agency has jurisdiction the case.

I am so tired of everyone playing the race card. So what if your ancestors were slaves, how do you think the Native Americans feel, or any other race the wonderful "white" Americans have screwed with?

America is full of people from all over who came here to escape whatever persecution, etc they were going through.

I'm sorry. I must have missed something. Where did race come into this? "The monkey got out of it's cage." is supposedly about Obama?

I guess being raised in the South I just don't automatically assume that things are racist from the start. I might be naive; but, then again, some people might be a little overly sensitive.

Kind of like when I was working around Pittsburgh and I told an African-American lady that she looked just like another lady that came in the day before and she went into a rant about how "all black people probably look the same to you!" I thought it showed just the opposite. That she alone among all the other people that came into the store looked like this one other individual. I probably should have not made the comment; but, I thought the resemblance was remarkable. I thought maybe they were sisters or something.

I personally am proud we finally have a mostly-non-white president. I am disappointed that we haven't gotten to the MLK Jr. level yet though. Most people that voted for him are still judging him on the color of his skin and not the content of his character.

I'm sure past presidents have been a mix of other races also, yet you don't hear people say, 'half German' or whatever the case may be. Yes, black people were tortured and made slaves and discrimination exists today. But scores of other people have endured the same: Jewish, Irish, Chinese, and Native Americans to name a few, and yet I really don't hear them bitch about the wrongs against them as I do from the blacks. This is the present and we're approaching the future, yet the past seems to be holding them back. If people want to sit and wallow in self-pity, that's their problem. Many of you appear to be unaware of racial "code" words.

Referring to Americans of African descent as apes, monkeys etc has long existed to seek to disparage our humanity

(No need to treat monkeys as humans..)

It gave a majority population sauve to justify their mistreatment of those of the darker hue

If you are not familiar with these code words then you could not process the indignation of those who are and thus aware of this subtle way to offend.

The vestiges of slavery, and the instituional policy of Jim Crow (not so subtle) have only recently been dismantled
The psyche wounds thereof have yet to heal.

A person who would text this aort of message is one who would seek to derail the process

I don't think anyone should be hyper-sensitive and turn every issue into "racism," nor should folks, on the other hand, act hyper-defensively in the manner that some of you responded.

Yes, it is the 21st century and race relations have much, much improved from just a few decades ago. And people shouldn't exploit past racism for their own benefit, exploitation, or reverse racism. But let's also not behave as if racism doesn't exist in this day and age. It does, as the subtle (and not so subtle) comments on this blog provide for an example.

Anglos didn't necessarily start slavery and slavery wasn't exclusively one RACE controlling another.

No matter WHO practiced slavery, in MANY cases, it IMPROVED the condition of MANY people in servitude. Some SLAVES became SLAVES to actually SHIELD them from CERTAIN DEATH!!!
Read some ANCIENT WORLD History sometime, and see what I mean!!! Not all SLAVES were grossly mistreated.

So many people on BOTH sides of the aisle and BOTH sides of the issues, forget that NONE of our problems started with Christians or Anglos.

All members of a RACE, don't create most of our problems, either.

Some people just aren't very smart, because they don't WANT to pay attention to the important details. Whether you burn the History books or the Historians, we ALL lose!

Don't tell ME what you want ME to do for YOU, and show the US what you can do for YOURSELF!!!

bewildered:

I clicked through on this link because I wondered what it was about. I read the comments and learned it's supposed to be about racism somehow. My thoughts:

1) I never got a racist implication out of it, so does that make me a racist or a "post-racist"? Or what???

2) Do the people who DID get a racist slant out of it expect me to be outraged about it as well?

3) Will they be just as outraged along with me when some other racist/antiethnic fool calls Germans "krauts" and it offends me? BTW,it doesn't. There will always be childish fools who think they come out looking better if they can put someone else down. If you are better than your accuser, whether "black monkey" "white cracker" "ignorant (enter your nationality of choice)" or whatever supposedly derogatory title you are called, then just ignore the idiot and move on with your life.

4) Are some people racist? Yes. Do we have to pay attention to them? No - unless there is something more life-threatening going on than just name-calling. Will there ever be a time when there are no racists at all? Dream on and hope for change if you like, but keep a firm grip on reality too. You may no longer be the target, but there will always be someone who needs to put someone else down to create false self-esteem.

5) Does anybody really need to give a damn about "code words" that only the people most lacking in self-esteem use to hurt others or suspect others are using to try to hurt them? There are racists. They do use code words. Ignore them. Don't insist that those of us who don't know the code have to learn it and join in the racist worldview. I'm past that and hope you can be too.

(BTW and for the record, I didn't vote for Obama, but it has absolutely nothing to do with his skin color. I don't like his policies and wouldn't vote for anyone of any color who held them.)

If you are always looking for the racist remark, then everything is racist.

I wish people would stop looking for worst and just let things go.

There is nothing in the article that indicates that this was racialy based. the story was about someone using a text pageing system and sent an alarm that the monkey got out of the cage. it does not tell you that perhaps the monkey was rather expensive, or being used for experiments or even if it was ill and could infect others.

So why does everyone ASSUME that it has to do with race? or with the president?

This is so STUPID to have this many posts over nothing. Go up! I see more racist attitude towards caucasions than they give off.

CURT:

I am not sure how we got to race from that text. so if I say "I am going to spank my monkey" does that mean that I am really going to bend a black man over and hit him on the bottom? no!!! maybe there is a monkey who just so happens to be out of his cage!

Black President? why is that when they like someone who is half/half (mom white /dad black)
hes black! Obama/Tiger... but if he was a jerk and had opposing views. I bet he would be Obama the 44th white president.

Nicole:

as someone that actually received this message while at dinner last Tuesday night, the most concerning thing to me is not whether the texter is racist, or the message meant Obama, but rather that my personal information (along with my friends and classmates) was vulnerable to a hacker. This text messaging system was put in place to protect UF students, not expose them. No article or comment yet has discussed this problem: what other information could have been obtained by this "prankster-text messager?". I want to know what is going to be done to further protect our personal information, not speculate as to what his cryptic message meant.

Kas:

I think Obama will be a great president, what he is, is an American man. His skin color makes no difference to me, nor should it. I did not for one second think about race or our new president when I read this article, until I read Sheila's comment. She says whomever sent the text and picture are both ignorant and racist. What does this tell us about Sheila? Does she know those people? Doubtful, yet she is calling them names. A couple (or more) comments said Obama is of mixed heritage, this is correct, his mother is white, his father is black. Who among us is not of mixed heritage, and if we are, why would anyone care? We are ALL of one blood. I'm certainly not going to bear the burden of what some people did many years ago, long before I was even born. Barack was elected because he is who we the American people wanted to be our president. Should many people be angry because it's rarely mentioned that his mother is white? I'm proud to be an American, I voted for Obama, I believe he truly cares about our country and will do his best to make things better for all of us. I deplore racism, and people who make everything about race are the real people that are racist!

Kleocatra:

This message really could have had more deadly meaning thank the universe it did not.
1.) It could have been a signal to terrorist cells to strike at targets.
2.) It could have been a confirmation of sleeper cell.
3.) It could have transported secret security codes. (Where certain letter actually represent numbers or pages of a code book.
These are just a few possiblities.
For those that have a difficult time swallowing a bi racial man being president. May I make the following suggestion to help you adjust to the reality of the situation:
1.) Think of him as a white guy who stayed in the tanning bed too long.
2.) Think of hime as a black quy who shouldn't have used so much sunscreen.

When I first saw the article I thought that it was referring to one of those monkeys that splatters people with it's feces. When I read the first reference to racism and Blacks I could not figure out what the terms referred to. You know what, I'm happy I did not understand what the whole thing was about and if there our others who did not understand, Can we be friends?

You've got to be kidding me... next thing you know, somebody's going to sue the people who make the "Trunk Monkey" security devices for vehicles, saying that it disparages minorities. What a shame that people live in such a combination of paranoia and the delusion that everyone's else's thoughts, words, and actions are focused upon them. I'm beginning to think the opposite of "racism" is "narcissism". LOL
