Futuristic series will depict mass exodus from U.S.

What if the current financial crisis in the U.S. becomes so severe that Americans start to flee the country? Welcome to "Americatown," a Chinatown-like enclave of U.S. immigrants in cities around the world.

HBO is developing the futuristic drama series, which hails from writer Bradford Winters and producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy.

Set 25 to 40 years in the future, when the precipitous decline of the U.S. leads to a mass exodus of its citizens, "Americatown" centers on a cluster of newly arrived American immigrants in a big foreign city.

"By presenting Americans as immigrants in the near future, as both underdog and hero in the drama of global dislocation, we substitute a mirror for the rancor that informs much of the partisan debates on immigration," Winters said.

In his research for "Americatown," Winters had explored possible nightmare scenarios that could bring the U.S. to a collapse decades down the road. Among these hypotheticals: the price of oil skyrocketing and natural disasters reaching catastrophic proportions. Then suddenly oil hovered near $150 a barrel this summer, floods hit the Midwest and the South, and Wall Street crashed under the weight of the mortgage crisis.

Be it Americatown or Chinat... (Below threshold)
Joey G:

Be it Americatown or Chinatown, it is still the old USA.
The bail out logic is the stronghold of the Bush controlled Republican Party and that "scare tactics" that have started the war in Iraq.
These and all, is the last hurrah for Bush and company having to imagine that McCain's desperate thrust into his conservatism in getting the Oval Office might perchance forgive the Wall Street anomalous dealings with the White House controlled economy without letting the Americans know about it, until massive researches that this volatile situation Paulson wanted to oversee, in behalf of the lost policies under the Bush administration.
If what these people have maintained and predicted what will happen if no bailout is made, then let it be. The Americans is an ingeneous people and can get away within a short time. But leaving a legacy of a lost cause, the coverup of mistakes, and the handling of that Iraq war with no reason at all, have started from top to bottom. Let the ax fall to whomsoever knew and started this whole mess.
No taxpayer can use their valued resources to bail big giant companies at the behest of the White House.
Or, maybe McCain's quest that the ?MUST win" format, thereby the timing of Paulson and Bernacke, having been known trumpeters of the Bush administration came to view, like sheeps running like mad to avoid being eaten by the wolves.
Is this on a QUID PRO QUO status?
The fear factor?
Paulson's questionable appointment to the Treasury Dept that will connect to Goldman Sachs?
Bernacke's playing God?
The USA's picking up the remnants of a failed administration that will top all GATES, from Watergate, Troopergate, and BUSHIGATE!
And using the Democratic controlled Congress either to topple them or erase them on the map in the halls of Congress?
It is a Mission Accomplish data that went sour.
If Pelosi and the rest of the Democrats will succumb to Bush Game Plan, they should let the bailout be formed from THE BOTTOM UP, not otherwise.
Bush has the edge for (1) the haste being made before he plays farmer in his Crawford Ranch; (2) The entire Bush legacy that will surely place their names in American history as ....; (3) Paulson and Bernacke's future depends on this bailout mess.
As what a saying goes, "IF YOU WANT TO COMMIT AN EVIL, SELECT THE LESSER EVIL!"
Rice and Cheney are already hidden themselves in underground location leaving McCain whom they consider a demi-god to change this worst situation come what may.
"You can fool the people one or twice at a time, BUT NEVER ALL OF THE TIME."
Gentlemen, I rest my case.

What the over educated fail... (Below threshold)
Bobby K Hawk:

What the over educated fail to realize is that most Americans are Christians. Only those on the left in their single Marxist ideological world are saying exodus is not an issue. Watch the global corporations in the next few weeks. They are facing double digit increases in tax and the threat of unions to boot. They will simply pull most of their resources out of the US and leave us with only hulks of corporations that can easily be closed as the only workers will be salary.
December of 2008 will see the largest layoff of US factory workers in the countries history. It is no longer possible for the international corporations to make money in the US and they know it, so they will leave.
This will leave workers with only a few choices, work on the US collective farms or move to more prosperous countries and rase your standard of living.
With our spoiled nation thinking they deserve everything (aka Katrina), the hard lessons will come fast. The exodus is not only real, its already started. The wealthy of the nation are moving assets off shore where they already have the ability to work outside the US borders. America will become an empty nation with all of its wealth moved off shore to other more friendly nations. As the Marxist scramble to keep America afloat, they will take drastic measures to keep Americans working. Most will be futile attempts at communism that has already failed in other countries.
I feel sorry for my fellow Americans that will be forced to stay in the country during its worst hour. I think back on the stories my grand parents told of the depression and can only hope they make it through. As for me I am looking for a country at this specific time to relocate to, I have a son with Autism and do not want the Marxist government of the US to use him as a medical cadaver.
Good luck and go with God
