Harold Perrineau, who played Michael up until the character was exploded off the freighter in the finale, tells TV Guide that he can't help but draw the conclusion that race was a factor.
"Listen, if I'm being really candid, there are all these questions about how they respond to black people on the show," he told TV Guide. "Sayid gets to meet Nadia again, and Desmond and Penny hook up again, but a little black boy and his father hooking up, that wasn't interesting? Instead, Walt just winds up being another fatherless child. It plays into a really big, weird stereotype and, being a black person myself, that wasn't so interesting."
"Lost" executive producer Carlton Cuse responded in the publication, saying, "We pride ourselves on having a very racially diverse cast. It's painful when any actor's story line ends on the show. Harold is a fantastic actor whose presence added enormously to 'Lost.'"
Sounds like sour grapes to me.

Aaron (Claire's child) is another fatherless child.
Sayid and Nadia, Desmond and Penny. They were both reunion of a romantic nature. Neither of the children (Walt or Aaron) were reunited with their fathers.
It's unfortunate that some people try to paint everything racially. This says much more about Perrineau than it does about the writers of Lost.

oh boo-frickin-hoo
Michael had ZERO problem with leaving everyone else to die on the island when he sailed off with Walt, now were supposed to believe they whacked him because he's black?
Is that the same reason why he took Walt and bailed on everyone else too? Because he's black?
And that's even if he and Jin are really DEAD.. Jack's father DID appear to Michael seconds before the boat went kablooey..
Even Ben said to Jack that EVERYONE needs to go back to the island as they were going to drag Locke's rotting carcass out the door....

This is LOST, people.
We didn't actually see Michael die, they'd already established the island wouldn't let him be killed, and the "visitation" that occurred just before the bomb went off leaves plenty of room for Michael to pop up next season.
And after setting up Walt as the mysterious kid with the strange powers, you really think we've seen the last of him?
This is just Perrineau setting the hook for a big "Michael Returns" episode next season.

Except for right before the explosion when Jack's father (forget the character's name) appeared and told Michael that he could go now...
