Disney's sequel to the bizarre and extremely successful High School Musical debuted this weekend and blew all competition, both past and present, out of the water.
17.2 million people tuned in to watch Zac Efron and company. That's almost 70% more than tuned in for the series finale of The Sopranos earlier this year.
High School Musical 2's TV debut was
- The most-watched basic cable television program of all time.
- The most-watched basic cable movie of all time.
- The highest-rated television program ever for children age 6 to 11.
- The most-viewed Friday television telecast, cable or broadcast, in the past five years.

The kicker is (from the Variety article) that this total doesn't properly capture the size of the audience since this became an event viewing. Many homes (mine included... 8 year old girl) and other locales became group viewing locales, and thus the total viewership is likely a fair amount larger than this total. Mind boggling...

...and when I was in Target yesterday, I heard teenage (and younger) girls humming or singing songs from HSM2 three different times (yes, I watched it - so sue me).
It's not the greatest musical ever, but at least it has a couple of catchy tunes and some nice messages.
Cute girls, cute boys, singing, dancing, drama, comedy - gee, I wonder why it's so popular?
