Less than 24 hours after Woods finished second at the U.S. Open on Father's Day, his wife gave birth to a daughter. Woods announced on his Web site - tigerwoods.com - that Sam Alexis Woods was born early Monday morning.
"Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully," Woods wrote. "We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks. We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy."

I imagine it is short for Samantha. A name that is very popular for girls right now. How do I know this? I have 2 little girls myself and fought to keep that name off of my wife's maybe list.

when they give birth announcements, it's the FULL name, not abbreviated nick names. the caveat to this is if they announce the full name first and say the couple will call her "Sam" usually in quotation marks.
and taz, I could care less what anyone names their baby. but you, my friend, have issues.

One difference Vagabond is that Tiger Woods is giving the birth announcement on his website. There's no rule saying that they have to use the full name. Not much of a big deal anyway.
