I love when the animals take their revenge.
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - A 400-pound gorilla escaped from his enclosure and ran amok in a Rotterdam zoo Friday, biting one woman, dragging her around, and causing panic among dozens of visitors before he was finally subdued, officials and a witness said. The Diergaarde Blijdorp zoo was evacuated and the 11-year-old gorilla, named Bokito, was eventually contained in a restaurant within the park, police spokeswoman Yvette de Rave said.
Four people were injured, including the woman who was bitten, zoo director Ton Dorrestijn said.
Bokito was shot with a sedative dart and recaptured, said zoo spokeswoman Lilian Jonkers, but she couldn't say what his condition was. It was not immediately clear how he managed to climb the high stone walls surrounding his enclosure.

Why? B/c she understands that the animals don't want to be captivated and don't know how to react when they escape? As a race, humans are all but kind to those less intellegent. The ape should have eaten a few.

"...that the animals don't want to be captivated..."
Oh, yeah. That gorilla was soooo mistreated. You realize of course biologists take very good care of zoo animals? Of course you do.
"...that the animals don't want to be captivated..."
You give the gorilla too much credit, and humans far too little.

Im Dutch and the news here is more specific about the incident. The woman he attacked had apearantly visited the zoo and the apes in particular for years on a daily basis. Zoo staff claim that the fact that the gorrila went straight for that woman is because he recognized her. The woman later claimed that she did see that specific gorilla daily and liked to look him in the eyes and smile at him. Him raising his lip while looking back was a smile back she thought for all those years. Infact, gorilla's see eye contact as a big threat. So this might be a reason he went for her. The reason he came out of his island was probably because people (kids) were teasing him throwing little rocks at him. People claim the zoo staff has known that He was irritated for days before the incident but obviousely did nothing to minimize risk (why risk losing money, right?).
The woman was bitten 100 times and her hand is destroyed. She will probably go to court against the zoo for not keeping the gorilla restrained enough. World wide zoo's use water to keep the gorilla's back. But now apearantly they do make the huge leap if they are angry enough.
Zoo's are not devilish institutions but they are certainly not the nobel animal saving organisations they sometimes claim to be. Let's not forget zoo's are commercial enterprises and that civilians love seeing animals and are willing to pay for it.
Animal wealthfare doesnt stop at proper food. The zoo (and every zoo in the world for that matter) knows very well how much stress monkeys get from people staring at them.
Ever seen chimps throwing their faecies to the crowd? Well, thats them trying to get you all to move away and let them be. The zoo knows this but is far too happy with its income.

I thought everyone knew never to make eye contact with a primate. But this lady was doing it on a daily basis?! No wonder the ape jumped out and kicked her a$$, sometimes animals can't take anymore bullying and just snap. She was tormenting this animal, but probably didn't know her actions were hostile to the ape.
