On Wednesday's results show, in which Kellie Pickler got the boot, the judges; notably Simon Cowell; apologized to Katharine McPhee for their harsh assessment of her rendition of Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing."
Which got me to wondering; what if McPhee really was comparing herself to Whitney by singing a song made famous by the fallen 80's icon? What's so wrong with that? Who actually remembers Whitney as a great singer anymore?
Certainly the 2006 version of Katharine McPhee is far more compelling than the post-Y2K Whitney Houston. In fact, about the only thing Houston is famous for anymore is this...

Don't get me wrong, I think Katharine has a beautiful voice, but no one and I repeat NO ONE can sing a Whitney Houston and do it better than her or even try to compare themself to her!She is the greatest singer that has ever lived so whoever thinks they can out sing her.......YOU CANT!!!!!

Umm.. yes, people do remember Whitney Houston. I don't re-call 'remember', she still has an AMAZING voice. Most singers nowadays are hardly remembered. People like Whitney, Elvis, Madonna, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey are the most best singers of the past. Whitney, is the BEST singer/voicalist, and she still has her singing/vocal voice. She could even probably sing One Moment In Time.

Whitney is going through some difficult times at the moment but she cannot be replaced. She can, however, be healed by the power of prayer. Maybe if we all channel our thoughts into positive prayers, we might see a change for the better for our dear Whitney. There have been others to fall captive to drugs and they have been totally healed. Maybe one day she will make a very good counselor to others that become victims of this awful disease. Keep the faith, Whitney, God is still in the healing business.

Ok maybe she fell off a bit, but it hasn't been that long ago and remember there are lots of crackheads in the music industry who get on stage everyday and entertain the masses. Let's stop being so ignorant and give the woman her due for all that she has accomplished.
And by the way, just because you want to hump McPhee, Kevin doesnt erase the fact that she hasn't had one performance when she hasn't gone off key. Lets not compare apples and oranges. In an attempt to compare apples and apples. McPhee cant touch Kelly Clarkson. Kevin u are wrong about everything except about the fact that TenderHope IS annoying.

Greetings Everyone:
I'd first like to say that I'm sad to see our Sister, Whitney Houston in this condition. Remember however that this is media and exxageration is indeed possible. Whitney is a person anointed and appointed of an all-mighty, all-powerful God, therefore there is indeed no comparison to her God-given gifts and abilities to impact the world. Whitney is in a situation. Hence, there is nothing too hard for an all-mighty God. The world see's her now but remember there is a later if God will's it to be so, as such, we just might be around to see and witness yet another miracle and move of God in his daughter's life who He made and LOVES, the life of Whitney Houston. She still belongs to GOD, Almighty and His Son Jesus Christ for He is not like man (humankind) that He would lie. God Bless you all and thank you for your prayers.

Yes Witney was (was) great and we now how a new star (Kat) to behold. Simon was an idoit for stirring the country into comparing Whitney and Kat. As for the apples top apples comparison, Kat blows away the artificially created Kelly Clarkson......blows away!! I think the average Joe or Jane in this country are happy in their bliss. Those who think Whitney can still sing must have missed her last live performance on TV. I think Whitney at her prime was the best vocalist ever -- better than Barbra, Celine, Brightman -- anybody else. But her last TV performace was pitiful -- she couldn't reach the highs and screeched at times. Crack is no doubt to blame. Will there ever be another Whitney in my lifetime? Probably not. But Katharine at her best comes pretty close -- and with training and experience she could get better. I think her high register is a bit thin, but she's still better than most female vocalists who sell millions of records.

First of all it is a known fact that Ms Houston was the greatest singer of all time but I do have to agree with some comments that on her latest performances her voice has cracked (but I sincerely hope she recovers as Im a big fan, but also honest) I also agree that Madonna has never been known for her singing, or lack of it and excuse me but Kelly Clarkson is a far better vocalist than Katherine even if her material is a bit manufactured. In saying that but I would say Katherine is a good singer but lets not even put them in the same league and all that Simon was trying to say was that if you are going to sing a Whitney song then make sure you do it as good, and lets be honest if you listen to Whitney singing it live at the Billboard awards in 93 and listen to Katherine on Idol she is nowhere near as good as Whitney. Also Whitney will always be remembered because she had 7 consecutive number 1's which not even the Beatles or Elvis could do, she has sold well over 150 million albums worldwide making her the 2nd biggest female artist ever, only beaten by Mariah Carey (Madonna is in 3rd place with over 140 million) and she has been in 3 major motion pictures so people stop Whitney bashing and start supporting! Madonna's success is a real joke to me. She's not a real singer at all. She's just a one woman business enterprise. I respect her for her work ethic and great dance ability and little more. She got far too much credit as a singer and proved you don't have to even be a good singer to make it in the music business.
As for Katharine McPhee, I don't think it's faire you're comparing a contestant on AI to the great singers of our time. She's only 21. No telling with seasoning how far she'll go. You've got to remember, Whitney and the others were first heard from the recording studio and later perfected their performances in concert, not on television. You've got to consider that in the recording studio, Katharine McPhee is going to shine more than on television in terms of her vocal style and sound.

Whitney Houston is the greatest singer of her
generation! No one will ever come close to matching
her vocal talent, stage presence. She can not be
replaced by anyone....least of all an amateur Idol
contestant, who will easily and quickly fade back
into obscurity as the majority of the Idol contestant already have. A couple of weeks of singing on a contest show, does not qualify her to
be compared in the same sentence with Whitney Houston! Simon Cowell called it right the first
time. That was not the 1st time he has done a soft
backpedal on a contestant he ripped into, then
apologized because he felt guilty for being to harsh, only to have them disappear never to be seen or heard of again!
Wake up people! Just because Whitney is currently
on the sidelines, does not mean she can not come
back if she chooses. What God gives, only he can
take away, heal and make whole again, the life of
this special child of God, by the name of Whitney
Houston.

Yeah, you are kind of a h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e aren't you? You posted here and just labeled yourself a loser. I'm a singer interested in other singers which is why I post. I needed to find an outlet about Madonna because I can't believe people could ever consider her a "great" singer let alone a singer at all. She's an example of how people choose their singers based on peer pressure, advertising and the media. They did a study that showed many people just go with the flow with artists based on what many others listen too. It's often not a matter of taste.
Whoever wrote Madonna was a "great singer" on this blog page is severely brainwashed to ever believe such a thing. It's almost like the Emperor having no clothes, she's an entertainer, dance act who adds the singing element, but she is no where being a real singer.
I can sing better than Madonna and I haven't sung in 20 years. Here's my latest song I wrote, produced, sang and arranged:

Summer Jazz
This is music! So refreshing yet relaxed and makes one look inwards at ones life. This is beautiful reflection music that sails you across the ocean with the summer wind through your hair, the sun on your face and salty sea spray on your lips. You cant get tired of listening to music like this...Because it is the real us, without masks. Whether into rock or classical you will reach a stage in your life where this is what you want to hear. It caresses your soul.
Whoah!
First of all the voice is very graceful and perpetual in sound, she sounds as though she could do it forever. Very good instrumentals and percussion coinciding very nice effort! I See Now Why I can Appreciate the heart of jazz. A Toast To The Modern Jazz! Not To mention such a catchy breakdown with the piano and keyboard! Wow I am amazed Good Work good Work. Keep It Up.

Whitney made history with her voice and success. There is NO DOUBT whatsoever she will go down in history as one of the great singers of all time. She set the bar higher for singers such as Katharine McPhee to strive for and made jokes of singers like Karen Carpenter.
Whitney's material was lacking most of the time, but her voice wasn't. I really didn't like many of the songs Whitney made hits out of, but appreciated how truly great her voice and technique were.
As far as where Whitney stands today in her life, I'm pretty sure her husband sought to ruin her from the start, killing her slowly. Got her hooked on crack with his buddies, etc. He can't take all the blame, but he has manipulated her over the years - it's obvious.

Whitney was outstanding; her voice was pure. With all of the problems she has had associated with her life must have taken their toll over the years. Nevertheless, what she has done has been magic and I am glad I enjoyed her conterts, albums and specials.
Katharine McPhee will do very well. She has a very good voice and the camera loves her.
I find it unfair to compare Whitney a proven superstar to someone who is just starting out. I am sure Katharine will do very well in her future.
I would but Whitney, Barbara, Sara, and Celin at the very top of the list of outstanding singers of our time.
Let Katharine enjoy her success and hopefully she too can mount a carear over time.

Whitney is a singer, not the best, not the worst. Just because Katherine sang a song Whitney had sung in the past didn't mean she was cpmparing herself to her. She was just singing a song one of her idols had sang before. So please stop being stupid adn enjoy the show, besides I don't see Whitney coming back anytime soon, so be thankful she is at least being remembered.

After scanning a couple of dozen of these comments it seems they mostly fall into a narrow group of young (20s and 30s) listeners with limited knowlege and memory of what has gone on in the music industry the past 50 years. When Whitney burst on the scene she was a significant talent and her immediate success proved that. However, some people can't handle success very well: they get (mentally and emotionally) fat and lazy, and in her case, self destructive. She wasted her self and her wonderful talent. If you want to check the record -- easy enough to do with resources like Google -- compare her career's number of hits, records sold, movies made and their revenues, number of years as a productive person, and number of credits and place in entertainment history to Barbra Streisand. With Streisand, you see a different kind of intellect, talent and professional. As for Kat McPhee, she has a great deal going for her. I think it's wrong to criticize her for what she isn't: she's not going to win over the crowd that likes the gangsta rhythm talkers who can't sing; she won't show up on the juke boxes in southern truck stops; she won't do exercise videos posing as song and dance performances. What she'll probably do is have a rewarding and professionally satisfying career as a singer and actress. Why? She sings well, technically: her voice will last. She's smart enough to take care of herself: her fortune will be based on her health and healthy appearance. She's pretty enough that people will want to watch her perform for a long time. She can record, do concerts, Broadway musicals, guest appearances, and probably movies, too. Will she be as "unique" as Madonna, or Aguilera, or Barbra, or Celine...or Whitney? Maybe not. She's more of a traditional pop singer, minus the quirks. But she'll also probably have a significant career, longer overall and more diverse than 90% of the women on the "charts" during the past few years. That's not a bad achievement.

I've been thinking a lot lately about female singers in our culture throughout history. I believe they get abused a lot while men are more widely supported and respected. This is reflected in what happened to Whitney Houston's life and many others like her.
I saw a lot of abuse of Katharine McPhee on American Idol. I saw a huge difference in the support the two top guys got with thousands of people comeing to meet up with them, while poor Ms. McPhee had a small gathering in her old high school gym. That was insane, the amount of support those guys got, entire baseball stadiums filled to the brim? Entire shopping malls? Parades? Poor Ms. McPhee is in the top two and they couldn't come up with any significant amount of people in Sherman Oaks to support her. They showed her meeting up with her dog!
This lack of real support explains why so many of these female vocalists have problems in their lives, or have to be a tough cookie like Madonna. Women get abused in the industry. Whitney was strong, but not that strong. Madonna had to kick ass to make it and stay on top. Ms. McPhee should immediately get into therapy to deal with the abuse she's been encountering to recover and move on with her career. I can guarantee this lady is full of a lot of anger for all the crap they put her through, that is pushed below the surface.
I couldn't believe the amount of abuse Katharine McPhee had to put up with on that AI show. It's not fair to compare her to Whitney Houston. They should have respected her for taking on her song instead of trying to shame her in front of millions of people.

Whitney 's always been doing drugs, for fun, the difference beteween yesterday and today, she's older and doing a lot of drugs.
Her borthers havec always been cocaine users, big pot smokers, it's well known and have been to rehab many many times. WHen her mother let her go, she met the ugly bobby and became one of the girl of the project. initially that's where she comes from.
she would never EVER have married a white man.
she is no cinderella and never has been. She's been trying to convince people for a long time, saying it in interviews, now there's no more doubt about if.

Most of you people must be smoking crack too! Whitney was, and I repeat, WAS one of the greatest female singers of all time. But singing styles have changed from the 30's, 50's, 80's till today, so who is to say how great one singer compares to another? Most of the people making comments on this posting were probably in diapers when Whitney was in her prime and have no memory of her performances. Sadly today she is a burnt out crack head only worthy of tabloid reports; too bad the law didn't take care of repeat offenders like Bobby Brown and sent him to prison where he belongs. Maybe Whitney would not have fallen so far? As you see, each year AI comes up with greater talents, we can all argue who is best and who got dumped prematurely because it became a popularity contest, but it is safe to say that most of the top 10 finalists will benefit from the exposure and live their dreams of becoming vocalists and entertainers. There's more important things to worry about these days than who's better that who!

It would be gratifying to Whitney to see all the nice comments people have posted here. Everyone needs some recognition, respect and affection, and this website is as good a place as any to pass along some to her. Meanwhile, regarding Katherine McPhee, it will take a few years to see which way she's going. Based on her start, she shows quite a lot of promise despite the unfounded negative remarks, above, about her. To pull in 18-25 million votes the final two weeks is a good indicator that the public holds her in high regard. With some maturity, experience and guidance she'll be a continuing success story. As for Whitney being either the "best" or "one of the best," ever, the facts don't support that, but her fans and apologists are welcome to their opinions. If you want to see who they're all in the shadow of, look no further than Barbra Streisand. Here are the numbers: Barbra Streisand is the music industry's #1 best-selling female artist with 50 Gold, 30 Platinum and 13 Multi-Platinum albums to her credit. She is second in the all-time charts, ahead of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, exceeded only by Elvis. She continues to be the highest-selling female recording artist ever. Streisand remains the only artist to receive Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe, Cable Ace, and Peabody Awards, and the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award. She may not be your favorite, but I challenge you to show me anyone else who has achieved half of what she has as a singer, film or entertainment professional. I hope Whitney recovers herself and regains her dignity and the respect of the country. We'll see in ten years how Katherine has done. For now, there's only one best and the rest are just fighting over second place.

I'm sorry people liked it for the movie, I guess they were not able to make the difference.
She is not actrice for sure, even her bodyguard kevin C is a loser in this movie.
Yes whitney has been it all, I do remember very well, let's be content. It's not about musci changes cause her music is no "has been" it's just that she just has voice to curs and spit on bobby ine this horrible bobby show. Well I guess she knew what she was doing, cause she's always been doing it all for every member of her family, a bit to much for this tiny thing. (nasty as well, cause boy she is nasty). Forget about it, let's listen to everything she left, it's quite enough. (scuze my bad english)

Lastly, I think she did a superb job in the Preachers Wife and all other movies; keeping in mind that she's never had any ACTRESS TRAINING, etc. It is good to try to wish the very best for all, for in so doing you will reap good in your life. I'm a witness to what the Bible says about "judge not lest you be judged" and that "you shall reap what you sow" All the very best lives to all of you. Peace and Blessings.

I'm nearly 40 years old, so I am one of the few here that remembers how truly breath-taking Ms. Houston was when she burst onto the scene in the 80's. With or without drug use, I can't imagine anyone's vocal abilities could go unchanged for 20+ years. Let's chalk some of her imperfections up to the simple fact she's an older, more mature woman. Just as Aretha, LaBelle, and even Babs matured in their talents, shouldn't Whitney be allowed to do the same. I agree, she seems to be going through some storms right now. But, who can deny that her musical contributions (past and present) have left a lasting impression on the world. She is, without a doubt, one of the most dynamic and gifted vocalists in history. Of course, right now she's an easy target. I also think it's safe to say that she's probably unphased by the negative comments, tabloid rumors, and numerous attacks on her current situation. When it's all said and done, she's still Whitney Houston. Kat is simply a young artist trying to achieve what Whitney accomplished years ago. Maybe in 20 years she'll be worthy of the comparison. As of now, she has her hands full trying to establish a career in a world where Houston is already a superstar. I can understand how some may be won over by Kat's abilities. She's got a beautiful voice and tons of potential. But, let's not lose sight of the fact that Kat is the one singing Houston's songs...NOT the other way around. That alone should put this entire debate in perspective. May God bless them both.
