Long time Hollywood character actor Darren McGavin has died just a few months short of his 84th birthday. A generation of youngsters knew him as the cursing father of Ralphie in the 1983 classic "A Christmas Story," but he was a TV staple for decades - the embodiment of oh-so recognizable, if not wildly famous character actors (IMDB).
His official website notes:
Darren is gone, but in many respects he will always be with us: as Carl Kolchak, fighting authority and battling monsters; the grumpy Old Man sending curses over Lake Michigan; as David Ross, the outsider, Grey Holden, captain of the Enterprise, the irascible detective Mike Hammer or any number of memorable guest star appearances, most notably as Joe Bascome on GUNSMOKE and as the washed-up old actor from "Distant Signals."He'll always be the guy who sees this and says, "It's a major award!"

Ah, the sweet glow of electric sex...

Several generations of youngsters and oldsters know him for this. Many ONLY know him for this.
FYI, Dennis Weaver died on Friday, too. He was 81 as well.
